Since this is all based on merit rather than XP, do we really need this? Maybe we should explain how merit works...

You've adventured a lot and done some epic stuff and now the Staff say you feel stronger and can do slightly more epic things! Congrats! I mean it's not like we have stats, character sheets, and dice here, you know? This is more anime style.

On the flip side of that, if you try to do something that's obviously not going to work, like as soon as you get into the world, immediately go out and take on an undead horde all by yourself, or fight a demon bear naked, or... Yeah... You're going to be paying a visit to one of the Goddesses and hoping someone can resurrect you.
